Siemon introduces MapIT G2

July 17, 2009

Friday, Jul 17, 2009

Network cabling experts Siemon have launched MapIT G2; a high density next generation intelligent infrastructure management (IIM) system that can monitor up to 2880 ports in a single rack space. MapIT G2 offers best-in-class user interfaces, 80 per cent higher density and a 75 per cent reduction in power consumption versus competing systems.

MapIT G2 integrates a powerful combination of innovative Smart Patch Panels, user-friendly Master Control Panels and MapIT software to provide real-time tracking and reporting of network-wide physical layer activity.

Designed with a higher degree of intelligence, MapIT G2 patch panels and fibre enclosures feature an onboard LCD screen that provides connection status, diagnostics and dynamic label information. The LCD display provides more detailed instructions to technicians versus simple LEDs or traditional non-intelligent panels. The ability to monitor and display copper and fibre patching fields in real time and perform diagnostics through this onboard interface reduces troubleshooting time and speeds the completion of work orders.

The MapIT G2 Master Control Panel (MCP) collects all network infrastructure data provided by the Smart Patch Panels and fibre enclosures, monitoring up to 2880 ports in just 1 rack mount space (U). The MCP features an integrated LCD display and keypad, which provide technicians access to key network architecture and diagnostic information. By providing this interface locally within the patching zone, the MCP virtually eliminates the need for technicians to carry PDAs or directly access the MapIT software server. The MCP interface allows full end-to-end graphic circuit traces for any channel in the system and can perform extensive diagnostic tasks on any component or port.

The combination of MapIT G2 patching and MCP enables 80 per cent higher density than competing systems, providing a huge reduction in the amount of critical and expensive data centre rack/cabinet and floor space. For example, common IIM systems can require up to 60U of equipment to manage 20,000 ports. MapIT G2 can manage the same 20,000 ports in just 7U.

In addition to improved density, MapIT G2 dramatically reduces power consumption, using 75 per cent less power than other IIM systems for a real “green” advantage. This lower power consumption reduces heat generation and energy consumed by thermal management systems, a significant benefit to data centre managers looking to reduce operating costs. Available in category 6A (Class EA) F/UTP, UTP and category 6 (Class E) UTP as well as singlemode and multimode 10Gb/s optical fibre, the MapIT G2 system is fully scalable. It can handle networks from 24 ports to 65,000 ports in a single patching field, making it equally effective managing a massive data centre or a widespread network of small remote sites.

Maillefer provides EPL 25 extrusion lines for manufacturing highly resistant silicone cables

July 17, 2009

Friday, Jul 17, 2009

Maillefer provides EPL 25 extrusion lines for manufacturing highly resistant silicone cables for electrical wiring. Interest is building for this type of cable. Indeed, several factors are building towards a peak in demand for production capacity. Vesa Koskivuo, product manager, cites examples “like the European standards being defined for safety cables and fire resistance, the growing activity in Arctic regions, and the increased exploration for resources. Cables need to resist to mechanical and chemical aggressions placed on them while remaining functional even in extreme conditions. We are ready to meet our customers’ demand with an extrusion line especially designed for this toughened product.”

Mr. Koskivuo summarizes the attractiveness of silicone cable. Flexibility across a wide temperature window is one key advantage. From Arctic sub-zero to oven hot temperatures, the cable retains its flexibility. “That is a key advantage when cable is laid across frozen tundra or installed in exposed structures.” Another big plus is its behavior when burned. An outer crust forms around the conductor when consumed by flame, which helps it keep its dielectric qualities. “Cleary, its fire resistance characteristics make the cable worthy for safety applications, like emergency electrical systems and fire alarms. Plus, low smoke generation is an added advantage.” Chemically stable, the insulation material is resistant to aging agents like UV, salt, heat and humidity. Cables previously insulated with silica are advantageously replaced with silicone. Silicone is tough and offers very good mechanical and chemical resistance.

Mr. Koskivuo qualifies the configurations suited for the process, “The EPL 25 lines are built and tailored for the individual applications in order to provide high performance production for the best known types of silicone cables. Manufacturers communicate the details of their cable constructions and we design the optimum package of extrusion, curing, cooling and wire reeling capacity to meet their requirements.”

Maillefer’s water cooled extruder for silicone is fed in bands or pellets. The crosshead is water cooled too in order to maintain the warmed silicone below its critical curing temperature as it is distributed around the conductor. A series of curing tunnels follow, where temperature can reach up to 750° C max. The usual downstream equipment is positioned after curing and includes a multi-pass cooling trough, measurement gauges, powder application and continuous winding on reels.
