Japan 09/10 copper cable shipments seen down 7.9 pct

Japanese copper wire and cable shipments in the year to March 2010 are expected to fall 7.9 percent from a year earlier to an estimated 705,000 tonnes, an industry association said on Thursday. Japanese copper wire and cable shipments amounted to an estimated 49,500 tonnes in February, down 32.4 percent from a year earlier, the Japanese Electric Wire and Cable Makers’ Association said.

Demand for copper, used extensively in wiring and construction, has plunged as the economic crisis forces automakers and other manufacturers to curb production.
