Break in fiber optic cable disrupts Internet, phone service in Berks

A break in a major fiber optic cable owned by Frontier Communications disrupted telephone and high speed Internet service to about 13,000 customers Tuesday afternoon in Berks County, officials said. The break occurred about 1 between Reading and Plymouth Meeting, Montgomery County, according to Berks County Emergency Management officials. Service was restored to all customers by 5 p.m., a Frontier spokeswoman reported.

Some customers experienced telephone service interruptions and were unable to dial 9-1-1, according to county officials.

Customers with 610 and 484 area codes with the exchange prefixes of 916, 926 and 248 were among those affected.

Some of the customers had a full loss of service, while others could call only other Frontier customers.

The break also affected the phone system in Wyomissing Borough Hall and the borough police department’s ability to receive incoming calls.
