September 10, 2008Anixter International Inc. had entered into a letter of intent to acquire the assets and operations of World Class Wire & Cable Inc. Anixter expects to complete the acquisition on or about October 1, 2008 following the finalization of certain contract terms and conditions as well as regulatory approval. Anixter anticipates paying approximately $62 million in cash and will also assume trade liabilities for all of the assets and operations of World Class.

African mobile operators to build $400m undersea cable
September 9, 2008Leading African mobile telecoms operators have signed a $400m pact to build an undersea fibre optic cable infrastructure that would complement the current but insufficient SAT3 in operation. The new cable will run from the West Africa coast through the rest of Africa.

HSBB project a pot of gold for fibre-optic cable makers
September 8, 2008Regardless of whether Telekom Malaysia Bhd or Pahang-based High Speed Broadband Technology Sdn Bhd (HSBT) lands the multi-billion-ringgit national high-speed broadband network (HSBB) project, local fiber-optic cable manufacturers stand to make a killing from cable sales. Industry sources said a conservative estimate would put the cost of fiber-optic cables at around 15%-20% of the overall project cost. So, if the project costs RM11.3 billion as per TM’s proposal, then the fiber-optic cables needed would come to about RM2 billion.

Russian telecom, KDDI start superfast cable link to Japan
September 8, 2008KDDI Corp. and Rostelecom, Russia’s largest long-distance telecom carrier, said Friday they will begin using undersea fiber-optic cables to transmit high-speed data between the two countries. The submarine cable system, which goes online Saturday, will provide financial institutions and other corporate clients with the shortest and fastest route linking Japan to Russia and the European region, the two companies said. Two 900-km cables, including a backup line, will link Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture, with Nakhodka in the Russian Far East at a data communication speed of 640 gigabits per second, about 1,000 times the speed of the current line linking the two countries.

Greece plans $3billion to upgrade telecom network
September 5, 2008Greece wants to invest in a new fibre optic network that will drastically upgrade its broadband and cable television capabilities, an AFP report said. The AFP report quoted Economy Minister George Alogoskoufis saying that “we have decided to invest as a country in a modern fiber optic network that will change the daily life of Greek citizens.” The seven-year project estimated to cost €2.1 billion ($3 billion) will provide high-definition TV, video telephony, quicker internet connections and other high-bandwidth services, Alogoskoufis said. It will be developed through a public-private partnership and is eligible for funding from the European Investment Bank, he said. An international tender on the open-access network will be issued in the second half of 2009, the report said. The contract involves the construction, maintenance and operation of a dark fiber network for 30 years. Greece has labored to increase the number of high-bandwidth users by slashing subscription prices and improving connections, the AFP report further said.
