ArcelorMittal Warszawa inaugurates new bar rolling mill

ArcelorMittal Warszawa, subsidiary of ArcelorMittal Group, today inaugurates a new bar rolling mill – one of the most advanced rolling lines in Europe, following an investment of euro 80 million. The Warsaw rolling mill is the latest ArcelorMittal investment in Poland. During the past three years, the Group invested over euro 920 million in Polish steel plants. These included a hot rolling mill in Cracow, continuous casting in Dąbrowa Górnicza, a coating line in Świętochłowice, as well as the modernization of the wire rod mill in Sosnowiec.

Alcatel-Lucent, Cable Co deploy submarine cable in Bermuda

Alcatel-Lucent in partnership with Cable Co, a Bermudia telecommunications company established by KeyTech, North Rock Communications and Transact, has installed the new Challenger submarine cable network in Bermuda. Challenger is expected to enhance Bermuda’s international voice, video, data and broadband services. Spanning 1,445 km, Challenger will link Bermuda to the United States. With an initial capacity of 20 Gbps, the new network can be scaled up to 320Gbps. The system is scheduled to start operations by early 2009. Under the terms of the agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will oversee the project and provide a turnkey network for the Challenger roll-out, including responsibility for the network design, installation and commissioning. Alcatel-Lucent will also deploy its 1620 Light Manager submarine line terminal, cables and power feed equipment, along with its 1678 Metro Core Connect.


Milwaukee Wire Products changes name, expands to China

Milwaukee Wire Products, a leading direct supplier of engineered components and assemblies to the automotive industry, has changed its name to Charter Automotive. The company is a division of Charter Manufacturing Company Inc., a privately owned producer of carbon, alloy and stainless steel bar, rod, wire, shaped wire products, and engineered components, headquartered in Mequon. “The new name signals our continuing international expansion and our ongoing commitment to automotive customers throughout the world,” said John Mellowes, chairman and chief executive officer of Charter Manufacturing Company.

Fibre optic cable to boost Mombasa status

South Africa could connect to Kenya by linking its UhuruNet undersea fibre optic to the East Africa Marine system (TEAMs.)According to TSA Submarine Cable News Feed released last week, Uhuru Net is in plans to partner with a Kenyan consortium to link the two countries.

MHI Wind Power Generation Business Gets Underway in Bulgaria; Project to Contribute to Japans Acquisition of Emission Credits

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has commenced business in generating electric power by wind turbines in Bulgaria, and selling it locally, through Kaliakra Wind Power AD (KWP), a joint venture established locally with the Bulgarian engineering firm inos Ltd. The wind farm, Bulgaria’s first, has already been built by KWP and is now in operation. All electricity produced will be sold to Natsionalna Elektricheska Kompania EAD (NEK), Bulgaria’s state-owned electricity utility.

StatoilHydro gas/condensate discovery in the Norwegian Sea

StatoilHydro Petroleum AS, operator of production licence 107, is now concluding the drilling of wildcat well 6407/7-8. The well is located about 16 km north of the Njord field in the Norwegian Sea, and proved gas/condensate. The objective of the well was to prove gas/condensate in reservoir strata from the Middle to Lower Jurassic in a prospect called Noatun.

KBR Awarded Contract by ADA-ES, Inc. to Build Premier Activated Carbon Plant

KBR announced today that a division of its Services Business Unit, BE&K, has been awarded a contract by ADA-ES, Inc. for the construction of its Red River Activated Carbon Plant located in Red River Parish, Louisiana. The contract is valued at more than $232 million. Under the contract, BE&K will provide full engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for ADA-ES’ newest plant. Work on the project will begin immediately. The award marks the third major contract award for KBR Services since its acquisition of BE&K in July 2008.

BG Group announces completion of drilling on Iara well in Santos Basin, offshore Brazil

BG Group today announced the completion of drilling on the Iara well (1-BRSA-618-RJS) in the BM-S-11 concession in the deep water, pre-salt Santos Basin. The exploration well discovered 26-30 API gravity crude oil. The well discovered a particularly thick Sag reservoir interval with excellent porosity. This is another first class reservoir discovered in the Santos Basin in which BG Group has several interests.

Prysmian Awarded 140 million Euro Contract in Qatar for the Development of the First Ever High Voltage Submarine Link in the Country

Milan, September 8th 2008 – Prysmian, a worldwide leading Group in the sector of cables and systems for energy and telecommunications, has been awarded a strategic contract worth 140 million euro by Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA) for the development of the first ever submarine cable turnkey project serving Doha, the capital of Qatar. This new agreement follows the 168 million euro contract recently secured by a Prysmian led consortium for the construction of a high voltage underground cable system, and further confirms the strategic role Prysmian is playing in the Middle East as a major utilities partner for the current power transmission network expansion program. Among other projects, Prysmian is currently involved in the construction of the submarine power connection between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, with the GCCIA (Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority).
