ACL Cables to launch first-ever copper rod plant in Sri Lanka

ACL Cables which recently won the World Class Asia Pacific Quality Award (IAPQA) 2008, said that they are now in the process of changing gear and concentrating on backward integration, and the Company is currently on the verge of launching Sri Lanka’s first ever copper rod factory. The factory will aim to produce almost double the requirement of ACL Cables of which it plans to export a large quantity of copper rods to the region. “ACL has always been a stickler for getting the technical know-how right, and this time around too we have got technical support for our copper factory from expert foreign consultants” says Suren Madanayake, Managing Director of ACL Cables. “This Copper plant is the natural sequence to our development process as we are a big importer of this product.”

ACL has already completed two backward integration projects successfully. In 1993 it set up its own PVC compounding plant which helped the Company not only improve the quality of regular imported compounds but also to help develop new products such as fire-rated compounds, water-resistant compounds etc which has been a tremendous achievement. In 2007 ACL commenced operations of its own rod plant in order to obtain various grades of aluminum rods that were fine-tuned to suit the needs of the local market.

It is believed that the new venture for the manufacture of copper rods would improve the competitiveness and quality standards of ACL further, as the Company will have access to the purest and finest quality copper. This in turn will further enhance ACL Cables’ capacity for product excellence, considering the higher amount of control this level of backward integration will have over input material for the manufacturing of cables.

Suren Madanayake, Managing Director of ACL Cables whilst commenting on the recent quality award that the Company won noted that “apart from winning the IAPQA award which is a great honour, we see this as a leverage point for ACL’s global expansion, since not only did we defeat 46 countries in the winning process but the fact that this award which is given purely for quality was won by an industrial product is in itself unique.”

“At the heart of our business equation is our continuous quest for perfection whether it is in acquiring new technology, the lean manufacturing process that we utilize on our production lines or the machinery we invest in. This why we are a success” Madanayake noted.

ACL Cables is the largest manufacturer and distributor of Cables and conductors in Sri Lanka with 4 factories within the country manufacturing Cables, Conductors and Enameled Wire. The Company which primarily operates in Sri Lanka with over 500 employees has its largest export markets in India, Australia, the Maldives, Bangladesh and African countries and is currently engaged in exploring to develop other markets for their products. Madanayake added that “the winning of the IAPQA was a great boost for our exports. Already several Quality Managers of our international clients have expressed their appreciation of our achievement. This can only help us to forge ahead to develop other markets across the region and the globe for our products. With this award we have proved that we are right at the top and this is no small achievement for a Sri Lankan Company”.

ACL Cables Limited was established in 1962 and over the last 4 decades the Company has made great strides in Sri Lanka’s cable industry by becoming its key player through innovation and advanced technology. The Company has hugely expanded their operations both within and outside the country. ACL acquired technology for XLPE insulated cables from NOKIA Cables of Finland and developed it through internal R&D to be the most advanced in the region. The Company was selected by the largest corporate in India to introduce XLPE Insulated Aerial Bundled Cables to New Delhi in 2003– despite the presence of 50 such companies in India. The ACL Company currently holds a 45% share of Sri Lanka’s cable market and is the most sought-after brand of cables in Sri Lanka.
