Milan, 29th September 2008 – Prysmian Cables & Systems, a worldwide leading Group in the sector of cables and systems for energy and telecommunications, has been awarded, in consortium with Siemens Transmission & Distribution Ltd, a contract worth a total value of 87 million Euro to supply the electrical package for the new 300MW Thanet offshore wind park, to be constructed in the North Sea. When completed, Thanet will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm project. Prysmian will develop the connections between the wind park’s one hundred turbines, as well as the high voltage submarine power links to the mainland British power grid. Prysmian’s share of the contract is worth around 36 million Euro; Siemens will supply the onshore substation and the offshore substation.

High Efficiency LED Street Light Trail
September 29, 2008Energy-saving LED street lamps will be trialed in Auckland from next month. The trial will establish comparative energy efficiencies and relative costs with traditional sodium vapour lamps. North Shore City Council transport infrastructure group manager Phil Consedine said that rapidly increasing energy costs and sustainability initiatives were behind efforts to introduce greater efficiency into street lighting. Maser has supplied it’s newest LU Series products to the council. High power LED light sources are extremely efficient returning a 50 to 80% saving over conventional sodium or mercury lamps without emissions harmful to the environment.

TF Cable Americas will provide cables to Texas and Louisiana
September 25, 2008TELE-FONIKA Cable Americas, the American subsidiary of the TELE-FONIKA Group, will provide power cables (which pass 2 kV) to Texas and Louisiana – two states which have suffered at the hands of Hurricane Ike. The delivery of the cables started on 13th September, immediately after the receipt of the order for power cables by TF Cable Americas. Hurricane Ike destroyed or damaged many power lines, especially in Texas and Louisiana. TF Cable storage in Batavia, Illinois, is prepared for the next emergency supply of power cables, which would take place after the valuation of power network damage in both states.

Sterlite Tech in talks to buy UK firm
September 24, 2008The acquisition, advised by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), could be announced about four weeks after completion of formalities. Sterlite Technologies, promoted by Anil Agarwal of the Vedanta Resources fame, is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire UK-based cable company Brand Rex for about US$55mn.

ACL Cables to launch first-ever copper rod plant in Sri Lanka
September 23, 2008ACL Cables which recently won the World Class Asia Pacific Quality Award (IAPQA) 2008, said that they are now in the process of changing gear and concentrating on backward integration, and the Company is currently on the verge of launching Sri Lanka’s first ever copper rod factory. The factory will aim to produce almost double the requirement of ACL Cables of which it plans to export a large quantity of copper rods to the region. “ACL has always been a stickler for getting the technical know-how right, and this time around too we have got technical support for our copper factory from expert foreign consultants” says Suren Madanayake, Managing Director of ACL Cables. “This Copper plant is the natural sequence to our development process as we are a big importer of this product.”

Nexans bags cable order from rail networks in Istanbul
