Energy task force, BIPCo spar over mainland cable idea
August 20, 2008Sparks flew between the Energy Task Force and a camp supporting a power cable to the mainland during an August 7 meeting. At the meeting task force members also acknowledged that the probability of the town purchasing the power company is slim and a company official said it is in private talks with state officials about installing a power cable to the mainland.

Weatherford Acquires International Logging
August 19, 2008Weatherford International Ltd. announced today that it has acquired International Logging, Inc. ILI is a world-class provider of surface logging, or “mud logging”, and provides formation evaluation and drilling related services at the well site through its team of more than 1,200 graduate field geologists serving customers in more than 55 countries from over 30 offices globally. With the acquisition of ILI, Weatherford adds a new service to its portfolio, which is already one of the broadest in the industry.

High Efficiency LED Street Light Trial
August 19, 2008Energy-saving LED street lamps will be trialed in Auckland, New Zealand from next month. The trial will establish comparative energy efficiencies and relative costs with traditional sodium vapour lamps. North Shore City Council transport infrastructure group manager Phil Consedine said that rapidly increasing energy costs and sustainability initiatives were behind efforts to introduce greater efficiency into street lighting.

New high efficiency jack-up named
August 18, 2008Maersk Contractors has named the latest addition of high efficiency jack-up rigs to the fleet. The new rig is the second in a series of four identical rigs currently under construction for Maersk Contractors. Two more highly advanced, next generation 350ft jack-up rigs will be delivered from Keppel FELS in 2009.

EA sea cable launch for June 2009
August 18, 2008MAURITIUS-registered private equity venture SEACOM said a fibre optic undersea cable linking east Africa to Europe and Asia would be launched in June 2009, in time for the 2010 soccer World Cup. The company said it would start laying the $650m cable, which is needed to provide high-speed Internet access and spur investment, in October this year.

Botswana invests US$100 million in submarine cable project
August 15, 2008The government of Botswana has invested US$100 million in Africa’s second biggest submarine cable project to bolster its plans to link with Europe via the east and west coasts of Africa. The East Africa Submarine Cable System (EASSY) project that runs under the Indian Ocean from Mtunzini in South Africa to Port Sudan in Sudan is currently under construction and is expected to be in operation by 2010.
