General Cable Reports Second Quarter Results; EPS of $1.37

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–July 29, 2008–General Cable Corporation (NYSE: BGC), one of the most geographically diversified industrial companies, reported today revenues and earnings for the second quarter ended June 27, 2008. Diluted earnings per share for the second quarter of 2008 were $1.37, an increase of 28.0% from the adjusted earnings per share of $1.07 in the second quarter of 2007. Reported earnings per share for the second quarter of 2007 were $1.15 including approximately an $0.08 per share tax benefit primarily from the reduction of certain state deferred tax asset valuation allowances.

Fluor Expands Operations; Opens New Alaska Office

Walsin Lihwa said to be entering LED market

Taiwan based electric wire and cable maker Walsin Lihwa is going to join the LED market and placed an order for Aixtron AG MOCVD systems in the second quarter this year, with the systems being delivered this quarter. LED industry players indicated that Walsin Lihwa’s investment will target both upstream and downstream segments of the LED industry. However, Walsin Lihwa commented that MOCVD systems can be used for various purposes, so the move does not necessary mean it is entering the LED market.

Leader secures RM700m orders

Group managing director and chief executive officer Sean H’ng said the group’s cable and wire products catered for the power and telecommunications sectors both in Malaysia and overseas.

Bell begins high-speed cable initiative

Bell Canada will bring high-speed fibre-optic cables directly to new condos and apartment buildings between Windsor and Quebec City, the company said yesterday. The deployment is part of Bell’s plan to wire 2.4 million homes with high-speed Internet connections by the end of this year.
