Bell begins high-speed cable initiative

Bell Canada will bring high-speed fibre-optic cables directly to new condos and apartment buildings between Windsor and Quebec City, the company said yesterday. The deployment is part of Bell’s plan to wire 2.4 million homes with high-speed Internet connections by the end of this year.

Having a fibre connection to the home greatly increases bandwidth capacity.

Analysts have said that a direct fibre hookup is the best way to ensure networks can handle the heavy load of high-speed Internet and high-definition TV services.

It’s estimated that 300,000 apartments will be connected directly to fibre, according to research firm Convergence Consulting Group.

However, only buildings with multiple dwellings will benefit from this. In other areas, Bell will deploy fibre to neighbourhood “nodes,” which connect to homes through existing copper wires.

Such connections are not as fast as fibre.

“These will struggle with high-definition capacity,” Brahm Eiley, president of Convergence Consulting said.
