Kobe Steel to build plant with Steel Dynamics

November 22, 2007

Japan’s Kobe Steel Ltd said on Wednesday Steel Dynamics Inc would build a commercial-scale reduced iron plant in the United States, using its technology for producing steel from low-priced iron ore and coal in small mills. It will be the first such plant built using Kobe’s ITmk3 technology.

Kobe, Japan’s fourth-biggest steel maker, said the project with Steel Dynamics would cost 26 billion yen in total, and the plant in Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota, will start operations in mid-2009 with an annual output of 500,000 tonnes. A joint venture, Mesabi Nugget Delaware, LLC, will construct and operate the first ITmk3 commercial plant and will produce and sell the iron nuggets, Kobe Steel said in a statement.

Steel Dynamics will invest $85 million in the venture, holding an 81 percent equity share, while Kobe Steel will invest $20 million for a 19 percent share, it said. Steel Dynamics will manage the construction of the facility and operate it. Kobe in June licensed this technology to Cleveland-Cliffs Inc of the United States. In May, it said it was in talks with India’s Chowgule Group on licensing the technology. Shares of Kobe Steel fell 4.6 percent to 332 yen, underperforming a 2.5 percent fall in the overall market.

Northwire cable is ‘uplifting addition’ to Stillwater Bridge

November 19, 2007

When the engineers involved in refurbishing the Stillwater Bridge needed a reliable signal cable to control the bridge’s vertical lift span—after the originally specified cable failed—they called upon Northwire, Inc. The lift span of the highway bridge, which crosses the St. Croix River and connects Minnesota and Wisconsin, is raised and lowered at least 20 times a day during navigation season, and the cable that controls it is unwound and rewound as many times. The Northwire-designed high-flex-life multiconductor cable fit the bill.

“We originally employed another manufacturer’s electrical control cable in the refurbishing project, but it failed within six months due to incorrect design, causing the lift span not to function and necessitating a temporary and costly ad hoc remedy,” says Bob Quist, project manager, A.A. Hanson Electric in Osceola, Wis. “We asked Northwire—a hometown company—to design a new control cable.

“Northwire visited the site, designed a solution, provided the design to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, got approval and produced the cable—all within three weeks,” says Quist. “The process took months for the original cable. We were very pleased with Northwire’s turnaround, and the smaller-diameter cable is more flexible and winds more easily than the originally specified bigger cable.”

The Northwire cable is one-third smaller than the previous cable. The new cable insulation is comprised of Hytrel® from DuPont, which accounts for its high-flex life properties.

The Stillwater Bridge—also known as the Stillwater Lift Bridge—connects Minnesota State Highway 36 in Stillwater, Minn., and WIS 64 in Houlton, Wis. From 10,000 to 20,000 cars pass over the bridge each day. From mid-May through mid-October, the bridge’s lift operates on a regular schedule when boat traffic is present. Outside of the regular lifting season, the bridge is raised upon request. The 140-foot-long vertical lifting span is a Waddell and Harrington type—one of six ever built in Minnesota and Wisconsin and one of three remaining today. It was the last bridge of this design to be built in the Midwest. The bridge has 10 fixed steel truss spans with a total length of 1,050 feet. The bridge is 23 feet wide, and traffic flows one lane in each direction. The Stillwater Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Northwire, Inc. is an industry leader in the design and manufacture of industrial-grade technical cable. Custom design choices include paired, non-paired, triads, various shielding and grounding options, special insulation options, and a variety of conductor and jacket materials and colors. Northwire celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2007.

Madeco copper products sells cable business to Nexans for US$448 million cash

November 16, 2007

Chilean copper products manufacturer Madeco (NYSE: MAD) has agreed to sell its cable business to French cable producer Nexans for US$448mn cash and 2.5mn shares in the European company, Madeco reported in a statement. After having signed a framework agreement on the deal, the companies will carry out due diligence and expect to ink a final contract by January 24, according to Madeco.

The deal would make Madeco Nexans’ main shareholder with an 8.9% stake. The transaction is still subject to a shareholder vote in both companies and regulatory approval. The deal is valued at roughly US$800mn based on Nexans’ trading price Thursday in Paris of 96.81 euros, down nearly 5% compared to Wednesday (Nov 14). Madeco shares were trading at US$13.89 in New York, down 1.68% from the opening price.

Nexans, already the world’s largest cable producer, aims to expand in South America with the purchase and especially in Brazil, where it already has operations, company COO Frédéric Vincent said in a conference call Thursday. The company’s strategy has a central focus of becoming “the world’s undisputed leader in energy cables,” Vincent said.

In 3Q07 Madeco made 161bn pesos (US$317mn) in revenues, out of which 103bn pesos came from cable sales to Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Peru and Colombia. The company also produces copper tubes and sheets, aluminum profiles and flexible packaging but cables are Madeco’s most important business in revenue terms.

Aristoncavi dsigned cable URSUS PUR HF 0,6/1 Kv through to Innovation & Design 2007

November 16, 2007

The electric cable URSUS PUR HF 0,6/1 Kv, designed by Aristoncavi in 2006, has taken part to INNOVATION & DESIGN AWARD 2007 “Augusto Morello”, organised as an event of Enermotive fair, that will take place in Milan in February 2007.
The product has been selected by the Award Jury for the final TOP SELECTION, in the INNOVATION category: the winners will be announced during the Award Ceremony, that will be held on Tuesday February the 6th, the opening day of the exhibition, at 12.30.
For Aristoncavi it represents another important recognition of its own commitment in the development of innovative products: the company has taken part to all the past editions of the award and has always reached the final selection, resulting as the winner in 2001 with DRINCABLE, the cable for drinking water immersion.

URSUS PUR HF 0,6/1kV

Power and signalling halogen free cable, with polyurethane outer sheath, for mobile applications.

The cable has been designed for power and signalling mobile connections, under severe mechanical stresses (tensile strength and torsion), for heavy duty conditions: all weather conditions, abrasion and crushing. The cable is typically used in cable winding reels for harbour cranes, container cranes, conveyors, handling machines and mining & tunnelling equipment.
The special value of URSUS PUR HF cable consists in the polyurethane outer sheath, which permits to reduce size and weight of the cable, permitting the cost reduction of the solution reeling drum+cable.
Being halogen-free, unlike traditional rubber sheathed cables, it does not emit toxic exhalations in case of fire, so that can be used for handling equipment in closed rooms.
